A logjam in the New South Wales government s planning approvals system for new mines has led Yanzhou Coal s Australian unit, Yancoal, to lay off about 20 workers at its 90%-owned Ashton open-cut coal mine, a Yancoal spokesman said Friday.
The Ashton Coal Project (ACP) is a coalmine located 14 km northwest of Singleton in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. The project includes an open cut coal mine, an underground coal mine, a Coal Handling and Preparation Plant and a rail siding.
Yancoal agreed at Moolarben, Ashton and Austar to guarantee full redundancy entitlements for 12 months. But Yancoal then teamed up with the other big mining bosses in CMIEG (the Coal Mining Industry Employer Group) and spearheaded the case to slash redundancy pay. And now Yancoal are part of a case to see compo pay cut by 26 weeks.
